The chart shows that high income earners consumed considerably more fast foods than the other income groups, spending more than twice as much on hamburgers (43 pence per person per week) than on fish and chips or pizza(both under 20 pence). Average income earners also favoured hamburgers, spending 33 pence per person per week, followed by fish and chips at 24 pence, then pizza at 11 pence. Low income earners appear to spend less than otherincome groups on fast foods, though fish and chips remains their most popularfast food, followed by hamburgers and then pizza.

From the graph we can see that in 1970, fish and chips were twice as popular asburgers, pizza being at that time the least popular fast food. The consumption ofhamburgers and pizza has risen steadily over the 20 year period to 1990 while theconsumption of fish and chips has been in decline over that same period with aslight increase in popularity since 1985.

The chart shows that the percentage of British households with a range of was in telephone ownership, rising from 42% in 1972 to 77% in 1983. Together with the big increases in the ownership of washing machines and refrigerators, they are evidence of both rising living standards and the trend to lifestyles based on comfort and convenience.(173 words)

The chart shows the number of hours of leisure enjoyed by men and women in a typical week in 1998-9, according to gender and employment status.

Among those employed full-time, men on average had fifty hours to leisure, whereas women had approximately thirty-seven hours. There were no figures given for male part-time workers, but female part-time had forty hours of leisure time, only slightly more than women in full-time employment, perhaps reflecting their work in the home.

In the unemployed and retired categories, leisure time showed an increase for both sexes, as might have been expected. Here too, men enjoyed more leisure time-over eighty hours, compared with seventy hours for women, perhaps once again reflecting the fact that women spend more time working in the home than men.

Lastly, housewives enjoyed approximately fifty-four hours of leisure, on average. There were no figures given for househusbands! Overall, the chart demonstrates that in the categories for which statistics on male leisure time were available, men enjoyed at least ten hours of extra leisure time. (173 words)

The table shows that figures for imprisonment in the five countries mentioned indicate no overall pattern of increase of decrease. In fact there is considerable fluctuation from country to country.

In Great Britain the numbers in prison have increased steadily 30,000 to 80,000 in 1980. On the other hand in Australia, and particularly in New Zealand, the numbers fell markedly from 1930 to 1940. Since then they have increased gradually, apart from in 1980 when the numbers in prison in New Zealand fell by about 30,000 from the 1970 total. Canada is the only country in which the numbers in prison have decreased over the period 1930 and 1980, although there have been fluctuations in this trend. The figures for the United States indicate the greatest number of prisoners compared to the other four countries but population size needs to be taken into account in this analysis. The prison population in the United States increased rapidly from 1970 to 1980 and this must be a worrying trend. (167 words)

Two principles for criminologists and judges to sentence an offender are, firstly, his purposes and then the effects that his behaviors cause. Therefore, people in and out of law life invariably respond differently to the sentencing of a case.

For one thing, some persons feel convinced that criminals should be punished in a standardized way as long as what they have done imperils social and personal security. One of reasons for them to believe so is that the way is not only fair to victims but also a respect to judicial system.

Nevertheless, a unified punishment system is not opportune under some circumstances since the crimes are done out of complex motives and in various situations. For example, a thief robbing cash to feed his children and another to buy illegal drugs must be different. As to the former, he, being unemployed probably, is forced to commit crimes to some extent because of the failure of social security system. In comparison, the latter breaks law only for personal indulgence. Therefore, they should be treated separately.

With the progress of mankind’s culture, people communicate information each other in more and more various way, including books, radio, television and so forth. Lots of benefits withstanding, shortcoming also can not be neglected for these three ways.

Firstly, book is a familiar word that most people prefer. Lots of people have hobbies of reading books for the reason that book is a place where writers can exchange their own viewpoints or theories to readers and readers can also know about the personalities of writer. Nevertheless, books do not have the quality of time efficiency and just represent some certain persons’ view.

In terms of radio, apart from newspapers, radio may be the cheapest way for people to keep pace with the news or information. Just one radio is what we need to listen to broadcasting for communicating. And we can do many other things such as driving, riding while we are listening to the radio. However, radio can just satisfy our senses of hearing because of its lack of screen.

Finally, for the television, TV has the quality of time efficiency and satisfies our visual senses. Television is a place where there is always much information for us to realize or communicate with each other. We can communicate the views on TV with ours while we enjoy the TV programs or news. But TV is always too sophisticated for the kids, particularly some violent or blue scenes do really have bad impacts on children.

In conclusion, I think TV would be the most effective way of these three ways for people to communicating information each other on condition that Some related legislation could be so perfect in the future that violent or blue scenes could be restricted.

The diagram shows the life cycle of silkworms and the process of making silk cloth.

The life cycle is divided into several particular developing stages. It starts when a moth produces her eggs on the mulberry leaves. After ten days the eggs grow into silkworm larva, whose foods are the mulberry leaf. The second stage ends. In the following four to six weeks, the larva will generate silk threats which cover the larva. This is the third stage. The fourth stage lasts for three or eight days during which cocoon is formed. 16 days after the formation of the cocoon, a moth finally comes out of the cocoon. A new cycle starts.

The production of the silk cloth consists of numerous steps. The first is to select cocoons, which then are heated in boiled water. After the heat treatment, the cocoon is ready to be decomposed into threads ranging from 300 to 900 meters in length. The second is to twist the thread together. To dye is the third. After this process, silk cloth is woven.

  劍橋雅思小作文 8

The most prominent memory of my trip to Europe in 1983 was not the excitement of traveling abroad for the first time but the discomfort of flying in a smoke-filled airplane for almost six hours. Even in the non-smoking section, I was coughing and choking during the entire flight. And whenever I had to use the restroom, I had to hold my nose as I passed through the smoking area to the lavatory.

If I ruled the world, I would certainly outlaw cigarette smoking in all public places. Fortunately for smokers everywhere, I dont rule the world. Nevertheless, I fully support the idea behind the New York State legislatures recent bill to ban smoking in all restaurants in New York State.

According to the New York Times, officials in both houses of the legislature say the legislation is "very close to fruition." California is the only other state I know that has banned smoking in restaurants and bars, and despite the predictions of some restaurant owners, I havent read any reports that restaurant attendance has fallen off significantly since the bill passed. Why should it? Food is a necessity. People need to eat.

Assigning designated smoking and non smoking areas in restaurants is not enough. Smoke travels quickly beyond the imaginary boundaries set up between tables and booths. As a patron, I should be able to enjoy my meal without choking on someone elses smoke. The same is true in bars and nightclubs, although I would exercise more legislative restraint in this setting because dancing and drinking are not as essential as eating. Still, why should I have to endanger my lungs just to go dancing?

I would ban smoking on public sidewalks and streets as well. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business, but once you pollute the rest of the world with cancer-inducing toxic fumes, it becomes the governments business. Im tired of asking people to put out their cigarettes or asking waiters to patrol the boundaries of their restaurants smoking section. So if this new bill becomes law, as I hope it does, non-smokers will finally be able to enjoy their restaurant meals without having to police the artificial lines of separation that divide the two sections in restaurants.

International tourism does trigger tensions in a diverse array of fields. To begin with, the increase in the use of such traffic means as airplanes, trains, buses, and the like weakens the fragile balance (equilibrium) in an ecosystem. It also ruins the biodiversity in the ecosystem. Next, tensions in economic development are also conspicuous. The primitive economic pattern is inevitably vulnerable to the influences from the tourists who come from different economic systems. Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan, China is a typical case in point, where the local economic pattern has been shifting from the agriculture to tourism.

Despite the tensions, international tourism contributes to the understanding between people from different cultures, religions, races, and political ideas. This is because the tourism per se is more than appreciating the beautiful, brilliant natural landscapes, cultural traditions, or interesting customs. It is a kind of contacts. To contact is to communicate. Communication naturally promotes understandings. For instance, the Americans who traveled to Tibet tend to understand why Chinese governments insist that Tibet be a part of the Chinese territory and it should never be separated from the Chinese sovereignty. In fact, religious understanding serves as another telling example. The Christians who visit an Islamic attraction are more easily to accept that different religious should be able to coexist.

To sum up, the international tourism helps people understand each other although it has caused some tensions.

Businesses have always sought to make a profit, but it is becoming increasingly common to hear people talk about the social obligations that companies have. I completely agree with the idea that businesses should do more for society than simply make money.

On the one hand, I accept that businesses must make money in order to survive in a competitive world. It seems logical that the priority of any company should be to cover its running costs, such as employees’ wages and payments for buildings and utilities. On top of these costs, companies also need to invest in improvements and innovations if they wish to remain successful. If a company is unable to pay its bills or meet the changing needs of customers, any concerns about social responsibilities become irrelevant. In other words, a company can only make a positive contribution to society if it is in good financial health.

On the other hand, companies should not be run with the sole aim of maximising profit; they have a wider role to play in society. One social obligation that owners and managers have is to treat their employees well, rather than exploiting them. For example, they could pay a “l(fā)iving wage” to ensure that workers have a good quality of life. I also like the idea that businesses could use a proportion of their profits to support local charities, environmental projects or education initiatives. Finally, instead of trying to minimise their tax payments by using accounting loopholes, I believe that company bosses should be happy to contribute to society through the tax system.

In conclusion, I believe that companies should place as much importance on their social responsibilities as they do on their financial objectives.

  劍橋雅思小作文 11

Some people think that environmentalproblems are too big for individuals to deal with. Others, however, think that each individual should take some actions. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is true that our tiny individual actions often seem insignificantcompared to the scale and complexity of global environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation and depletion of natural resources. But that does not relieve our duty as individuals to do as much as we can to deal with these problems.

Individual actions, small as they may be, can sometimes prove more effective than we realize. We can avoid driving the car, and take public transit, walk, or bicycle instead. This will reduce the use of fossil fuels and cut pollution. Saving energy at home, like turning on the air conditioner only when we have to, or turning water heater down a few degrees, is also ultimately good for the environment. Individual actions can also turn into united powers when, for example, the whole neighborhood is mobilized to participate in a local campaignto oppose environmentally damaging policies.

There are, however, obstacles that stand in the way of individual action towards environmental conservation. The first obstacle is the lack of professional knowledge needed to cope with serious environmental issues like soil erosion and salinity, which requires a significant amount of investigation and research. Another obstacle which makes individual action almost impossible is when an environmental emergency or accident happens, . an oil spill or a nuclear leakage near the border line, which would necessitategovernment engagement or even international coordination.

So, in conclusion, when it comes to environmental problems, individual actions are indispensable in the problem solving process. But the most pressing and complicatedproblems go far beyond an individual’s capability and so require the concerted effort of the government as well as the global community.

Some people think that university should not provide theoretical knowledge, but to give practical training that is beneficial to society.

  Do you agree or disagree?

The current hot issues concerning higher education include the one of whether university should provide theoretical knowledge or practical training. In my opinion, this issue is closely related to the different aims of different universities and the needs of the economic development of the respective country.

As we know, university education gives a student a better appreciation of such fields as art, literature, history, science, and human relations. Therefore, it is necessary for the university to provide theoretical knowledge for those students who intend to receive liberal education.

Most universities also have professional colleges that prepare students for careers, such as teachers colleges, agricultural or dental colleges. These colleges, apart from offering some liberal arts courses, usually allocate a certain period of time for professional training. For example, a student at teachers college usually takes a field training at a high school as a student teacher for two or three months.

Another important factor on this issue is the needs of the economic development of a respective county. For instance, in China, a great number of advanced professional personnel are needed to keep the pace with the rapid economic development. Therefore, cooperative education that combines classroom studies with practical work experience is more appropriate an education China needs at the present time.

In a word, how much emphasis that should be laid on theoretical knowledge or practical training is determined by the needs of the economy of a respective country and the needs of all-round personnel for a democratic society.

  劍橋雅思小作文 13

Some people think that the urgent task is to develop economy on a large scale. First, they hold that many people, especially in rural areas, are living in poverty. As a result, many children drop out of school and can’t afford even the compulsory education. Second, they believe only by further balance and developing our economy can we get rid of poverty and gain the overall prosperity.

On the other hand, many people insist that environment protection should be a top priority. First, they claim that we have only one mother earth, if our ecological environment is heavily polluted or ruined, we could not even survive on this planet. Second, they believe, it’s the rapid and advanced development of economy that leads to the present situation that most parts of the world are polluted. If the problem left unsolved, one day we may have nothing to drink, let alone develop our economy.

In my opinion, both economy and environment protection are our urgent tasks now. Without economic development, we should remain backward. Moreover, we might be conquered or bullied by other powerful countries. And without environment protection, we should lose our home. Therefore, the best solution is to develop environment-protection-oriented industries and agriculture so as to kill two birds with one stone.

Nowadays, whether evaluating and criticising teachers should be supported in the classroom has become a controversial issue. From my perspective, evaluation and criticism of teachers are necessary for the improvement of education if they are objective and reasonable.

On the one hand, proposing changes to teachers’ lesson content contributes to the improvement of teaching quality. Usually, it is difficult for teachers to realise the mistakes and slips in their teaching unless students remind them. Additionally, teachers may not clearly know what students have known and want to know when planning their lessons. If students can put forward their ideas and suggestions towards the lesson, it will be of great help for teachers to upgrade the teaching projects. Moreover, trying to evaluate teachers’ lesson is particularly beneficial for students’ academic and career development in the future. The modern education emphasises criticism and innovation. Undoubtedly, it is an effective way for students to debate or discuss with teachers.

On the other hand, the disruptive students will probably disturb the class and negatively affect both teaching and learning outcomes. When students voice their opinions in the classroom, it will be hard to maintain the order and discipline and the teachers may feel disrespected. Also, students will suffer a loss in terms of knowledge and other learning content. This is because teachers always devote much to delivering knowledge and explaining theories. If they are disrupted, the teaching plan may not be able to be fulfilled. As a result, both teachers and students have to face a loss in the quality of education.

To sum up, it can be recommended that students evaluate and criticise teachers in the classroom on the premise that they have decent manners without disturbing the learning atmosphere. Only in this way will teachers and students achieve a win-win outcome in education.

  劍橋雅思小作文 15

People have different views about how much choice students should have with regard to what they can study at university. While some argue that it would be better for students to be forced into certain key subject areas, I believe that everyone should be able to study the course of their choice.

There are various reasons why people believe that universities should only offer subjects that will be useful in the future. They may assert that university courses like medicine, engineering and information technology are more likely to be beneficial than certain art degrees. From a personal perspective, it can be argued that these courses provide more job opportunities, career progression, better salaries, and therefore an improved quality of life for students who take them. On the societal level, by forcing people to choose particular university subjects, governments can ensure that any knowledge and skill gaps in the economy are covered. Finally, a focus on technology in higher education could lead to new inventions, economic growth, and greater future prosperity.

In spite of these arguments, I believe that university students should be free to choose their preferred areas of study. In my opinion, society will benefit more if our students are passionate about what they are learning. Besides, nobody can really predict which areas of knowledge will be most useful to society in the future, and it may be that employers begin to value creative thinking skills above practical or technical skills. If this were the case, perhaps we would need more students of art, history and philosophy than of science or technology.

In conclusion, although it might seem sensible for universities to focus only on the most useful subjects, I personally prefer the current system in which people have the right to study whatever they like.

It is said that people are losing their enthusiasm for visiting local museums and places of historical importance. This essay will put forward explanations for this before suggesting solutions to tackling this problem.

There are many reasons why museums and historical places are not frequented by local people. The main one is that local people find paying a visit to local tourist attractions boring and a waste of time. In other words, such places would be visually unattractive and arouse little interest in locals, for the simple reason that they have been familiar with those places through school courses or personal experiences. Another significant reason is that the authorities charge a substantial amount of admission fee, giving rise to a reduction of the number of locals visiting historic sites. As a result, the destinations would be generally more appealing and worthy to the tourists than to the locals.

To encourage local residents to attend historical relics and museums, several measures can be prompted. First and foremost, authorities can change the perception of museums and historical sites by organizing cultural events and regular exhibitions, including weddings, concerts and celebrations. These renewals would provide the public with a new experience and attract media attention to historical values. Another solution is to offer free tickets and special promotions for local people at weekends. For example, the Confucian temple in China has set specific days on which free entrance is available for everyone to commemorate and honour traditional occasions. Therefore, a growing number of locals would be encouraged to come more regularly.

In conclusion, people avoid visiting museums or historical places due to their familiarity with those destinations and high entrance fees. The government can promote these sites by conducting interesting programmes and offering free or subsidised entry.

International cooperation is now everywhere: the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the car we drive - all may be the effects of international cooperation. Yet when it comes to issue of which of the two, the environmental protection or the world business, benefits more from international cooperation, opinions vary from one individual to another.

Needless to say, international cooperation has helped a great deal in environmental protection. When dealing with some environmental issues like global warming, we need the joint effort of all countries across the world. Even in face of local issues, the new technology from other countries can be very helpful. When developing the high-speed train in China, for example, a technology called “air cleaner” from Russia is used, which has helped to reduce significantly the air pollution along the railway.

International cooperation has greatly expanded the world business as well. International cooperation can not only increase the productivity but also bring down the costs. It is because of international cooperation that American customers can enjoy the high-quality commodities from China at low prices and vice versa. Meanwhile, if countries work together, they can make their products and services more agreeable to the local people, which in turn will create more markets. For example, Microsoft products are all originally in English and were met with cold eyes 20 years ago when they entered China. It was only after Microsoft cooperated with Chinese programmers and converted the language to Chinese that its products have been widely accepted in China.

It is hard, though, to determine which has benefited more from international cooperation. My immediate response would be that world business is the greater beneficiary. After all, I have seen with my own eyes how the expanded world business as a result of the international cooperation has changed my life. Of course, I am fully aware as well that our environment is becoming better and better thanks to the international cooperation.

The graph shows percentages of cinema attendance at least once a year in Australia between 1990 to 2010 with projections for the future. The graph is described by 4 groups of different ages which are 14 to 24, 25 to 34, 35 to 49 and over 50 year olds.

The youngest age group people have been going to cinema more than any other age groups and the percentage has been keeping very high at approximately90% since 1990. It is predicted to keep the high and to increase more from 2006.

The middle age groups people have enjoyed going cinema between 60% to 80%. The percentage of age 25 to 34 group has been higher than the one of age 35 to 49 group but from 2006 the percentage of 25 to 34 year olds people will decrease while the one of 35 to 49 year olds people will increase and get higher than the other one.

The oldest people seem to go cinema less than the other groups but the percentageof the attendance has slightly going up by 15% from 40% to 55% between 1990 to 2004 and it will keep increasing to 60% by 2010.

  劍橋雅思小作文 19

Some people believe that the majority of artists earn low salaries and hence government funding is necessary for them to continue with their profession. I strongly disagree with this statement because of the reasons mentioned below.

Most of the talented artists are earning good salary. In any field of art, hardworking and skilful artists have successful life with enough fame and money. More specifically, actors, painters, writers and dancers are getting good remuneration for their performance. Paintings of good painters are sold for a great deal of money. It is well known to the public that dancers and actors lead highly luxurious lives.

Government funding is not at all required for these artists. Most of the artists are leading good standard life compared to many other people in the society. In other words, there are many sections of people who are really poor and actually need some help from the government to meet their basic needs such as food, clothes and education. For example, there are many people who do not have a proper house to stay in. Road workers and construction workers are earning low wages. There are many families where there are sick males who are unable to do any job. So, the government should give its help and support to these poorer sections of the society.

Another argument against giving financial aid to artists is that most of them have some sort of university education. So if they are not able to earn as much as they want, they can do some other job to supplement their income.

In conclusion, artists are getting enough income and government support is not mandatory for them. Therefore I strongly disagree with the statement.

  劍橋雅思小作文 20

There is an upsurge in practical knowledge in these years and people have seen many education courses being totally theory-based. Going to college or learning practical skills, which is better, has been a discussion among public. In my view, the choice really depends on different individuals’ needs and will.

When a student is leaning academic knowledge in university, other skills are also developed. University education will focus on some exceptional abilities like organization, interpretation, evaluation and communication, which can help students to be a well-rounded person. A qualified student should also posses some important skills, such as problems solving and critical thinking.

Learning fixing or construction or something practical like these also sounds reasonable. It is well-recognized that every student has to work after they graduate. They should be equipped with competence which enhances the transition from school to work. Besides, an excellent student learner is admittedly important to society, but more important is his or her productivity. However, college education focuses more on theoretical knowledge instead of practical abilities, which distances learners from the real life.

My view is that this choice is according to different people’s needs and will. For instance, if a doctor spends 3 years in practicing medicine, his experience will be more than his peers who stay in college after they graduate. Also, in our society, a doctor’s reputation is based on his skills and doctors, practical skills are more important. However, it may be better to pursue further education for a philosopher until he gets a doctor degree. Meanwhile, different people have different wills to do different things, which means they can do the personal choice for themselves.

Overall, I think the choice is quite personal and people will make the best decision based on their conditions.
